Katrina's Angels is a national volunteer effort for Disaster Relief driven by the generosity of people wanting to make a difference for others following Hurricane Katrina. Katrina’s Angels exists to support communities affected by disasters by offering solutions to unmet needs and enhancing the recovery process through resource pooling and information sharing. We are committed to providing coordinated solutions to rebuild the lives of the individuals affected by Hurricane Katrina and other natural disasters through our volunteers and our partners. Through access to our network, disaster survivors and their communities with unmet needs will be connected to the resources available in our network. Katrina’s Angels has already worked with various organizations following natural disasters, including: Operation Love Thy Neighbor, Critters For Katrina’s Kids, Katrina's ToyBox, and Mercer County Binky Patrol. Katrina’ s Angels found the pockets of need, and we were able to direct approximately 4,000 brand new and very gently-used stuffed toys and thousands of books to families in MS and LA during 2006 and 2007. When Katrina’s Angels began, we provided direct relief to clients. Of the 961 evacuee families that registered with Katrina’s Angels following Hurricane Katrina, we were able to fully serve 360 of them, providing them resources for food, clothing, linens, blankets, housing, and other items. We were able to direct many of our clients to additional resources for tangible items like medication and furniture and intangible items like counseling, medical and dental care, and pet care. Our efforts will now be directed toward community projects to serve unmet needs in disaster- affected areas.
Katrina’s Angels has compiled and is continuously recording both national and state resources and is maintaining a library of files and links for use by volunteers, clients, and the public alike. This online file is available at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/KatrinasAngelsinActionForum/files/.
